Queensland Priority Crossings Evaluation

Bitzios Consulting conducted a comprehensive research study for the Department of Transport and Main Roads (QLD) to assess the effectiveness of priority crossing facilities in QLD. The project aimed to respond to stakeholder concerns regarding the functionality and traffic safety impacts of these facilities. Bitzios Consulting collected and analysed connected vehicle data and video footage of the interactions between vehicles and pedestrians / cyclists at over 50 priority crossing locations throughout QLD. The research revealed that design details matter and are crucial for the effectiveness of priority crossings, especially in low traffic volume areas. Specific design details identified included transition grades, sight distances, placement setbacks from through traffic lanes and the use of warning signage on approach.
